A valuer may be asked to estimate the price obtained from the sale of a property, using their expertise to advise the client on the market value. This is a valuation for sale, which analyses the relevant property market, potential buyers and comparable properties available at the date of the valuation.

A client can also request a purchase appraisal, similar to the one for sale, but which also takes into account the intended use: personal or investment.

In the case of transactions between related parties, an objective valuation is required to demonstrate that the price is market and in compliance with tax legislation. This type of valuation is frequently used in the transfer pricing file.
